ABOUT THE LEARNING MODULE

Welcome! This learning module is designed to reveal the ethical complexity of biomedical research. This module contains a simulation where you will play the role of a scientific researcher developing CRISPR-based therapies and be forced to make choices about your research agenda and how to engage with the public.

AFTER COMPLETING THIS MODULE YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  1. Be more aware of the contextual factors that influence research agendas.

  2. Identify some of your personal biases and how they may impact your research decisions.

  3. Feel more comfortable making research decisions with complex ethical dimensions.

  4. Be more familiar with ethical concepts about disability, power, equity, and harm.

  5. Describe the responsibilities that a researcher has to a broader community.

HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS MODULE:

Step 1: Instructions. Scroll down to watch the Simulation Instruction video.

Step 2: Run the simulation. Enter the simulation. First watch the background materials provided and then start the simulation. 

Step 3: Debrief. After you complete the simulation, watch the Debrief Instruction video and then reflect on the essential debrief questions. After you complete the essential debrief questions, you can then move on to additional debrief questions of your choice. 

Step 4: Learn more. Some debrief questions are tagged with specific resources for you to learn more about various themes brought up by the simulation. You can also access the complete collection of resources in the Resource Library. 

Step 5: Feedback. Once you are done, please don’t forget to complete the optional user survey.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • An internet connection and brower (i.e Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  • A pen and paper to keep notes
  • 60 – 90 minutes of your time. It is important that you complete all of the steps of this module for the full learning experience.
  • Optional: a few friends or classmates to run the simulation with
